Art Within Ruin

ABSTRACT

The future of all building is its ruin. They are reminders of the vulnerability of empire, the fragility of artistic endeavour, and the transience of human ambition. Decaying architectural vanitas of the past. How does one compare the Roman forum to a disused dairy shed? Can a spatial meaning be given to a modern ruin that otherwise should be torn down and replaced? A raised pathway forms a separation from the occupier and the existing structure. A sense of fragility and importance has been created from this loss of a connection from the interior to the body. To generate a purpose within the interior, the space has been divided into five exhibition areas. Whether one or more different artists works are present is up to the curator. Walls and ceilings separate the areas from one another as to purify the mind between each exhibit. The exhibition is something of a constant change representing the way in which existing structure will change over time. Every time the space is revisited it will have changed significantly, drawing visitors to the space almost habitually.
